Normally, if you were making a centre pattern, it would be 'framed' with a narrow strip of plain knitting - i.e. garter stitch - all round, see Diagram. A good rule of thumb is to knit twice the number of rows to start and finish as there are side stitches e.g. 4 plain knitted stitches each side = 8 plain knitted rows below and the same above.
